Many of us associate white and straight teeth with health and beauty. If your teeth are not naturally straight, you often consider the idea of using braces for cosmetic reasons or to address dental issues. However, how would you know if your teeth really need braces?

Our Dentists usually recommend braces to enhance patient’s “orofacial” appearance. With the help of orthodontic treatment, people who have problems on crooked, overbite or underbites, incorrect jaw position are corrected. Dental problems like these can result to gum disease, tooth decay, and headaches if left untreated and unattended.

When should I consider having braces?

People who have orthodontic problems can gain a lot of benefit from braces treatment. According to dentists, the ideal age of the placement of braces is between 10 and 14 years old. This is the time where the head and mouth are still growing and the teeth are more accessible to any correction. Parents are advice to talk to their children before undergoing for any adjustments in facial appearance.
Braces are not just of kids. Adults can also wear braces to correct minor dental problems and enhance their smiles.

Which braces should I wear?

We all have a choice on what kind of braces should we wear. However, it is best to consult our dentist to find out what is best for our specific problem. Basically there are three varieties of braces: Brackets, metal, ceramics, and plastics are considered as the most popular types of braces.

If you like a clear or tooth-colored and far less noticeable brace, ceramics brackets are best recommended. Lingual, or concealed, braces are attached to the back of teeth and are often hidden from view. Both types of braces use wires to move the teeth to the desired position.
Nowadays, there’s a new alternative to the traditional braces called aligners. These braces are invisible, customized, and removable so they won’t trap plaque between the teeth. Aligners are worn for two weeks and are remove when eating, brushing, and flossing. For adults who are having mild spacing problems, aligners are the best option.

How long will I have to wear braces?

The length of time for wearing braces depends upon your treatment plan. People who have serious spacing or bite problems will have longer period of treatment. Many patients wear full braces between 12 to 24 months before wearing a retainer to set and align tissues.
Try to cut down sweets, chips, and soda intake that generate acids and plaque. These food causes tooth decay and trigger gum disease. Replace these foods with carrots or apples. Avoid caramel which often cause wire damage and loosen brackets. Also avoid hard and crunchy snacks that can possibly break braces.
