Most of the time, we often neglect the most important things in life. Same thing happens in dealing with our dental health, we often forget that it’s not just enough to take care of our teeth, but we also need to take care of our gums. Of course, if we take care of our gums, our teeth also benefit from it.
There are actually a lot of stuff that may have major impact on the overall wellness of our gums. The darker it gets, the more you should pay attention to it. Weaker gums means weaker teeth. There are 3 stages of gum diseases that you need to be aware of, these could affect the bone that surrounds & supports your teeth.
· Gingivitis – most common and earliest stage of gum disease which was caused by plaque buildup on the gum line that also leads to inflammation. Bleeding may occur when brushing and flossing are done. Since this is just the early stage of gum disease, it is easier to reverse the damage since the tissues & bones that hold your teeth in place are not yet affected.
· Periodontitis – in this stage, the supporting fibers and bones that hold your teeth are gradually being damaged. A pocket below the gum line may begin to form, this pocket also traps food & plaque. You might need to consult your doctor for proper treatment to prevent further damage to your gums.
· Advanced Periodontitis – this stage is the severe stage of the gum disease, fibers & bones that support your teeth are destroyed which can cause loosening & shifting of teeth. This will greatly affect your bite and if not given aggressive treatment, your tooth might need to be extracted.
SYMPTOMS OF GUM DISEASE
You need to be aware of the symptoms of gum disease so that you’ll be able to detect and address the oral health issue as soon as possible. These symptoms include:
· Red, puffy, swollen or tender gums.
· Bleeding of gums during brushing or flossing of teeth.
· Pocket below the gum line – gums that separated from your teeth.
· Pus coming out from between your teeth & gums.
· Bad breath & bad taste in your mouth.
You might need to see your dentist if you begin to notice these symptoms as soon as possible.
How to Prevent Gum Disease
Just like other diseases, gum diseases can also be prevented through oral hygiene and proper nutrition. Regular intake of ginger, apple, milk, leafy vegetables and onion are some of the healthy choices to prevent gum disease.
Aside from these healthy food choices, it also more important to pay attention to your oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing and rinsing should always be done. A regular visit to your dentist should also be observed.
